"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate. Several of other individuals also made large payouts from similar wagers. Political Attention Emerges Politicians are starting to take note. Proposed legislation introduced on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet. The Prediction Market Landscape Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to political events. Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate. Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry. An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
